A Sunken Class Short Story

Part 1

The ocean is full of scary and foreboding creatures, hiding in various different corners of the seven seas. Tales abound of the monsters that inhabit these desolate parts of the ocean, preying on anybody and everything foolish enough to venture into their territory. Yet as with any dangerous proposition, there usually lies the tantalizing prospect of invaluable treasure that lies beyond for any adventurer brave enough to risk it all.

It is with this backdrop that we find ourselves following a group of intrepid young crabs as they slowly pick their way through the rubble and detritus that littered the undersea cave system that they are currently exploring. Moving delicately through foreboding twists and bends, the crabs nervously continued deeper into the darkness of the mountain, clutching their mining equipment closer and closer to their shells.

Within this group of plucky adventurers is Craken, a young crab barely out of adolescence, and equally filled with excitement and trepidation. She had been recruited by her fellow youths from the village to explore the uncharted mountains beyond the Sea Steppes in hopes of finding rich mines to loot and the opportunity to obtain treasures beyond imagination. While she was intrigued by the possibility of such a windfall, which could change the fortunes of their simple village, Craken had decided to follow the other crabs for a different reason.

Craken had grown up shy and introverted, perhaps due to her smaller stature than other crabs of her age. Staying home most of the time, Craken had instead found companionship in her pet seahorse Snib, whom she cherished dearly and had raised from a young fry. Unfortunately, Snib had recently peacefully passed on and while devastated from her loss, Craken was persuaded by her family to try and hang out more with other crabs instead of spending all her time at home. Therefore, when asked by the other village youths to join them in seeking out treasure, she had hesitantly agreed, in spite of the warnings from the village elders of dangerous monsters that inhabited the mountains.
